In everyday life, it is usually to obtain information or an opinion, isn't it?
What is the intention when coaching? In coaching, the intention is also to raise the awareness of the person being coached; to invite ownership and encourage new ways of thinking. Especially with young people, it is important to believe 'the answers lie within'. Young people can work things out for themselves when we truly listen to them and offer them open questions from what we have heard. This can sometimes come from what has not been said when you trust your intuition.
Young people never cease to inspire me. When offered questions that have a positive, optimistic message, their creativity is unlimited. Non-directive coaching is not always easy. One challenge is not to get drawn into making suggestions!
Encouraging and supporting a young person to find their own solutions builds their self-belief, self-esteem and personal resilience. After all, who is the expert on their life?
'Coaching for Parents - Supporting young people to SUCCEED' has more on questioning skills.
